In order to ensure that the different characteristics could be recognized and compared, the Bechers soon developed a consistent system. In their photographs of functional industrial buildings such as winding towers, blast furnaces, gas tanks, cooling towers and water towers, they increasingly made it their principle to isolate the objects from their surroundings, to place them in the middle of the frame and to avoid dramatizing effects. Today, this objective approach points to the authorship of Bernd & Hilla Becher.
One focus of this exhibition is on residential buildings in the Ruhr region.
In 2022 the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, presented a major retrospective, which was subsequently shown at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art.
