Diane Severin Nguyen

2 MAY until 7 JUN 2025
Opening – 1 MAY 2025, 11 am – 6 pm

Molitor is pleased to announce the first solo exhibition by Diane Severin Nguyen (b. 1990, California, US) at the gallery, opening on the occasion of Galerie Weekend Berlin. Presenting entirely new bodies of work including video, photograph and sculpture, Nguyen transforms the gallery into a universe between presence and disappearance, continuity and rupture. The exhibition suspends time in parallel currents, where things almost converge but never settle. Purity is never still—it is constructed in tension, an impossible image that can only be formed by what it is not.

Side by side, two projections: Snow falls in the jungle—a fantasy and an invasion at once. To its right, a procession of little girls’ outfits on wire hangers, yanked forwards and backwards by an unseen mechanical force.

Their movement suggests selection, a language of repetition, interruption, return. Some reappear, accumulating weight, while others slip away unnoticed. Fancy yet dirty, they hold the trace of lives both staged and undone.

Dates surface, one by one. A song begins, then cuts to static. The images slip—reversing, freezing, falling out of sync. Time shuffles, catching and releasing, circling back in uneven loops. One sequence stalls while the other rushes ahead; moments of alignment appear, then vanish.

Diane Severin Nguyen, who lives and works in New York City, is celebrated for her innovative approach to photography, video, and installation. Nguyen has exhibited internationally at renowned venues such as HKW Berlin, the Whitney Museum of American Art, Sculpture Center, The Renaissance Society, Rockbund Art Museum, MoMA PS1, the Carnegie Museum of Art, Schinkel Pavilion, Jeu de Paume, and the Hammer Museum, among others. Her films have been showcased at prestigious film festivals, including the New York Film Festival, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, as well as Berlinale and Woche der Kritik. Recently, she conceived a performance at the Museum of Modern Art Warsaw and was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2023.
