Brathwaite-Shirley’s practice acts as a diary, blurring the boundaries between reality, simulation, and subconscious experiences. Through the use of horror and uncanny figures, she draw viewers into experiences and emotions they would typically avoid, fostering empathy through shared discomfort. The show will feature new works, including canvases, folding screens, clothing, and videos, mirroring the interactive nature of her digital works and games. By representing the Black Trans experience and by tackling transphobia and racism, Brathwaite-Shirley’s practice fosters empathy and self-awareness, pushing audiences to reconsider their perspectives on identity and marginalization.
